  • Eligibility for registration of ships in terms of the Merchant Shipping Act;

  • Eligibility for registration of aircraft in terms of Aircraft Registration Act and EC Regulation 1008/2008; 
  • Distinction between ‘commercial’ and ‘private’ aircraft/aircraft usage;
  • Types of registration protocols and key features; 
  • Ship and Aircraft financing – key features (including discussion on enforcement); 
  • Recent developments on ownership/operations structuring from a shipping/aviation perspective. 


The seminar will not delve into tax issues.


Dr Nicholas Valenzia

Nicholas Valenzia heads Mamo TCV’s Shipping and Aviation Department with particular focus on assets management, finance and sale and purchase of assets. Nicholas has also vast experience in vessel and aircraft ownership and operational structures. Nicholas also coordinates vessel and aircraft repossession procedures on behalf of international credit institutions. Nicholas has vast experience in the reviewing and negotiating ship building contracts particularly with respect to merchant 
and supply vessels, as well as super yachts.   

Dr Denise Abela
Denise Abela is a senior associate in the Shipping and Aviation Department within the firm and focuses on re-flagging of merchant vessels and assets finance matters. Denise has considerable experience in reviewing and negotiating new-building and second-hand vessel sale and purchase transactions in relation to merchant ships, supply vessels and super yachts, the formation and support of shipping organizations, and regularly assists financial institutions with the registration of mortgages and other related securities.

Why should delegates attend?

To familiarise the audience with the key elements relating to companies involved in the ship/aircraft ownership and operation, including aspects relating to eligibility of registration of ships and aircraft in Malta. The seminar will also focus on modern trends in ownership and operational structuring such as leasing.
