Event Overview

The Malta Registry of Companies is responsible for registering companies and partnerships as per the Companies Act, 1995. Maltese company law provides for a very straightforward process to register a company. The formation process can be finalized within 24-48 hours from receipt of the documentation which satisfies the requirements established by Maltese law.

However,  depending on the Memorandum and Articles,  which defines the object and purpose of the company,  there are other administrative procedures that have to be carried out before a company can trade and employ persons in Malta.  This session will be going through these procedures and explaining the regulatory and service delivery framework of Government when it comes to businesses.

The core responsibilities of the Registrar of Companies arise out of the Companies Act, 1995. These are, registration of new commercial partnerships, registration of documents related to commercial partnerships, keeping the company and partnership register, collection of registration and other fees, publication of notices, issue of certified documentation, issue of good-standing and other certificates, reservation of company names, imposition and collection of penalties and investigation of companies. The Registry of Companies Agency also offer online services. This seminar will focus on the registration of companies and related matters.

Objectives of this session

To enhance knowledge of the attendees regarding incorporation of companies and the necessary formalities required and also to discuss issues pertaining to these matter.

Speakers
  • Ms Marika Tonna 
    Marika Tonna is currently the CEO of Business First.  Until last year she was the Chief Operating Officer of Malta Enterprise, the island’s economic development corporation. 
    She also forms part of the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ Action Group.  This Group has recently been instrumental in completely restructuring the methodology for the registration of business, effectively reducing the time frame for setting up a business from 27 to 3 days.  The team is now working on other aspects of the regulatory environment for business, spearheading the reform of a number of government processes and procedures. Ms Tonna previously worked as a Consultant in the Office of the Prime Minister, a senior position that involved managing projects of a general business, strategic and specialist management nature.  During this period she worked on a number of major projects in different Ministries. She has a management degree and an MBA from the University of Malta. 

  • Dr Geraldine Spiteri Lucas
    Dr Geraldine Spiteri Lucas is deputy director at the Registry of Companies Agency and she heads the Legal Unit. After graduating as a lawyer from the University of Malta she read for a Masters in European and Comparative law. She started her career with a leading local law firm where she used to offer legal advice to local and international clients and also represented various clients, as litigator, before Tribunals and local Courts. She is also a member of the board of examiners for the Department of Commercial Law of the University of Malta.
