FinanceMalta Educational Clinic on Investment Managers and Malta Pension Products
The Malta Stock Exchange in Valletta was the venue for the latest in the series of Educational Clinics organised by FinanceMalta in conjunction with the Malta Funds Industry Association, with the theme, ‘Investment Management Services for Pensions Established in Malta’.
Over the past few years, Malta has established itself as a centre for the management and administration of personal pension plans which primarily catered to the UK and other European markets. However, this is now in the process of changing due to the introduction of the new pension legislation in Malta; The Retirement Pensions Act (Chapter 514 of the Laws of Malta), as well as the new Regulations and Pension Rules, both came into force on 1st January 2015.
After an introduction by Dr Bernice Buttigieg, Head of Administration at FinanceMalta, the clinic was lead by Dr. Matthew Brincat, Senior Associate at GANADO Advocates who delivered a presentation about the role of, and the legal aspects surrounding, investment managers dealing with pension products which also detailed the recently revised pension regulations.
A panel discussion chaired by Dr. Brincat followed, focusing on the opportunities of interest to local investment managers, which may arise in the current emerging regulatory landscape, and how to take full advantage of them.
Other members of the panel were Mr. Stuart Fairbairn, Chief Officer, MSV Life plc and Mr Bethell Codrington, Global Head, International Pensions, TMF Group who commented “Malta has shown steady growth within this sector; however, in order to continue with this momentum, the local investment industry needs to take on the challenge of creating innovative investment products to present to Pension Funds”.
The clinic was well attended by lawyers, retirement scheme administrators, asset managers, life insurers, actuaries, and other financial institutions who participate in the international pensions industry in Malta and who are directly affected by these changes.
